Unfinished Print

This piece is a response to an inspiring artist call I saw that called for unfinished work. This is a contact-printed salt print using 4 x 5 inch large format film. It is a self portrait – the camera and I are reflected in the mirror leaning against the tree. However, the work is unfinished due to an error made during the fixing of the print that caused it to continue exposing and creating bizarre mottled patterns in the image. The print has been becoming more and more distorted over time, almost as if it is a living being and will eventually reach the end of it’s life. As this is a self portrait, it alludes to the belief that photographs peel away at the subject’s essence. So, the dissolution of this photo represents a loss of identity and a disremembering of the past.
